Single: The Same Sky – What’s Left

Montreal shoegaze welcomes the warmer months with themes of post-breakup rebirth

The Same Sky is an indie-rock and shoegaze band from Montreal, Québec, making “outsider pop.” With the release of their latest single, the band is bringing us their first release in 13 years and an introduction to their upcoming album, ‘Haunting in the Mountains.’ “What’s Left” is a breakup song that uses Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey as a vessel to process said breakup.

It’s a fuzzy, hazy, and dreamy shoegaze stunner that feels perfect for welcoming in the spring months. Despite the muffled vocals and the usual weight of a breakup, the expansive guitar riffs make this song feel as if the sky has been cut open and that there is a chance of rebirth ahead. Especially when the band fades away in the final seconds of the track, and Joseph Simon closes the song with “I will try my best.”

The Same Sky is made up of Joseph Simon (vocals and guitar), Rory Cogley (bass), Susil Sharma (guitar), and Hazel Dreslinski (drums and backing vocals). Their upcoming album Haunting in the Mountains was recorded at Gamma Studios by Samuel Gemme, mixed by Jace Lasek, and mastered by Nes.

You can find Haunting in the Mountains out on April 2nd via independent record label Casa Joven. Take a listen to “What’s Left” below.
