The new Reverends track “Sunshine Girl” has this incredible summery and fuzzy vibe that completely won me over. These Atlanta drone rockers are celebrating their tenth anniversary, and they decided to release a song that lead singer Dandy Lee Strickland actually wrote back when he was only fifteen. It is a really sweet meditation on a teenage crush that he was too shy to share back then. The fact that a song written by a teenager sat on the shelf for so long and came out sounding this good is amazing. It really shows how much the band has grown while still holding on to their roots.
When I listened closely, I was really impressed by how intentional the mix is. The track is drenched in this thick psych pop guitar fuzz that reminds me a lot of The Jesus and Mary Chain. But even with all that noise, the vocals are separated beautifully from the instrumental. The mix is actually quite sparse in the best way possible, and the steady buildup creates a wonderfully hypnotic feeling. As far as constructive feedback goes, I honestly would not change much at all, except maybe turning up the entire vocal bus by about three decibels just to let the melody cut through the wall of fuzz a little bit more assertively. It is a genuine work of beauty that captures that warm feeling of walking outside on a bright day. Hearing it now as a preview for their upcoming album Sunsight, Sunclipse feels really special.
