Single: Synthetic Friend – Nanaimo

With a hazy wash of sound, the debut single from Winnipeg indie-rock/dreampop quintet wraps itself around you and swallows you whole.

It starts innocently enough – sugar sweet and gossamer thin, with only a gentle, unassuming vocal and an acoustic guitar – but as it proceeds, it grows. It blossoms and blooms before your eyes (or should that be ears?!) and becomes more assured with the introduction of the rhythm section. It evolves slowly, but certainly, like a stroll becoming a stride. Eventually, the whole thing drops and the tempo shifts suddenly, surprisingly and satisfyingly.

Stylistically, we’re in Mazzy Star/Mercury Rev/Mannequin Flowers territory musically, with Emma Stevens’ vocals also reminding us of Agnes Trawczyńska from UK band Hazy Waters as well as Mélanie Pain from Nouvelle Vague. There’s a heartfelt – almost slightly emo – tinge to her delivery too, which lends it a vulnerability and a sincerity that translates and connects excellently.

The track is taken from their debut EP “Catching the Outlines”, which is due out January 16th on House Of Wonders records and is available in a few different physical bundles that can be found here.
