Single: Hannah Kate – Eggs in a Kettle

“Eggs in a Kettle” by Hannah Kate starts this indie rock ballad off with a heavy chorus effect on a guitar riff with echoes of some delay effects that are immediately accompanied by a smooth and catchy bass line. The drums then come in and vocals follow, cementing the tone of the song with a steady melody. Everything starts to fit into place as the instruments work together with the vocalist to produce the soft and droning harmonies that characterize the song.

The verses lead seamlessly into the chorus that brings the song into a heavier sound with overdrive effects on the guitars and punchy lyrics detailing and effectively conveying personal turmoil and struggles. With a short breakdown, we are led back into the familiar sounds of the verse’s distinct auditory rhythms. The lyrics and cymbals continue to paint for the listener the processing and grappling of the ending of a relationship and how it feels to grieve as you try to let go but can’t help but hold on to some parts of it.

The vocals echo a sense of longing as the instruments go into a longer breakdown right before the song picks up again with distorted guitar leads and rhythm as the drums bring it home for the listener with each crash and fill. Ultimately, a sense of resolution is conveyed with the coming together of all the instruments by each band member in unison to finish the song and the emotional journey filled with expressive yet soothing and comforting vocals, moody yet dreamy guitars, and the sick range of booms and cracks from the drums.
