Single: Sweet Unrest – Sometimes

The newest single from Sweet Unrest catches them in a surprisingly delicate, plaintive mood. Well, at least in the intro.

Well-known on the London indie rock scene for their raucous live shows and unbridled rock ‘n’ roll spirit (their fortnightly Sweet Spot residency shows at the Camden Eye are the stuff of modern legend – read our review here), new single Sometimes opens with a bit of a curveball.

Acoustic guitars, delicately played. The scraping sound of skin on steel. Sentimental self-reflection and an absolutely arresting vocal performance from both lead singer Jack River and backing vocalists. This isn’t what we expect from Sweet Unrest. However, this delicate, almost folky intro soon gives way to an anthemic wall of sound which feels much more like the full-throttle band we know and love. The various guitar tones are a special standout, as well as the interplay between the bass and drums, and Jack’s vocal that seems to flit between Liam Fray and Billy Idol.

The rest of the tune is meat-and-potatoes grandiose indie, albeit with a reflective undertone. Like The Courteeners, The View, and The Libertines before them, Sweet Unrest make classic British indie rock for the masses. Remember the name.
