It’s not very often that we agree to review a song after the opening 2 seconds. But as soon as we heard “painting my naaaiiillls, the colour of recycling bin” we were sold. Something about the delivery – a (mostly) lackadaisical cross between Swiss Portrait, ¡All-Time Quarterback!, Todd Modern, and We Are Scientists – connected instantly.
The music is an agitated, animated blend of bedroom pop, indie and electronica that’s brimming with anxiety, self-awareness and adventurousness, with a cheeky reference to Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah thrown in for good measure.
The track culminates in a cacophonous wall of high-energy, chaotic noise as the vocals soar to end up on a higher plane. Plastic Blue is not a song, it’s a fucking odyssey.
Made in a cabin in Michigan all by himself, California resident Stinkus (aka Tyler Thompson) absolutely smashed this one. We can’t wait for the full-length album – I love you, track star – which is due out by the end of the year.
