Philadelphia has long been home to one of the most dynamic and underrated music scenes in the United States, and artists like Sovei are showing why you should be paying attention. “Big World” was perhaps my favorite track of 2025, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting their debut EP, Other. The lead single, “January,” justifies that wait with an experience both beautiful and haunting. It’s a testament to Sovei’s increasingly singular voice that the song’s genre evades simple classification: call it experimental pop, threaded with inflections of jazz phrasing and ambient moodscapes. The closest reference point might be Bon Iver’s 22, A Million, but even that remains far from the mark.
“January” is cinematic and dreamlike, pushing sonic boundaries without ever losing its sense of intimacy and melodic force. A warm arpeggiation of guitars lays softly beneath the vocals, while the pangs of dissonance in the space between verses do as much emotional work as the verses themselves. It’s almost startling to realize that there’s no percussion in this track, given how big it can feel. That sense of weight and expanse is accomplished using only textural nuance—layers stacking on top of each other until the pressure overwhelms.
Sovei’s voice is the reason why it works so well: at once soaring and delicate, layered with lush harmonies, screaming to say something that you can’t help but need to hear. The lyrics are expressive and honest, landing with quiet urgency and a sharp instinct for tension and release. As the track ends, the accumulated weight of lines like “I wonder how it might seem to you / Is this just a dream that we do / When we’re in the dark” hits with a real sense of loss, and that feeling lingers long beyond the final note.
