Single: SSAANN – Above It

From the same label that brought us the wonderful trio Stray Fossa and the enchanting Siiieee____ (Germany-based Broken Palace), the new single from Milwaukee, Wisconsin quartet SSAANN is at the same time sleepy and dreamy but full of life.

Bristling and bubbling with sparkling creativity, Above It is as poppy as it is arty. Written by the band’s singer Melissa Simes (who is also responsible for the synths and guitars here), the song is delivered with utter conviction and has a beguiling – almost spectral – beauty, reminiscent of a combination of Lætitia Sadier, Hope Sandoval, and Karolina Komstedt – resulting almost in a feeling of magic or mysticism.

Musically, the synths are the star of the show, really – fluctuating from soft, subtle backing to full-on focal points. The guitars are also lovely and bring to mind the work of Metronomy or maybe even Daft Punk in their Random Access Memories phase.

The lyrics centre around the concept of letting go, moving on, breaking through. The song was written, according to Simes, “as advice to comfort others, but I quickly realized that this piece is also a reminder for myself.” The ubiquitous and universal appeal is there for all to see.

Special shout-out to Tommy Behan on the drums, who also beautifully produced the song.
