Single: Avery Friedman – You Move

Soft vocals, playful sound effects and cool guitars gives “You Move” a warm, memorable pull, especially once the guitars open up into full distortion at the chorus.

Brooklyn-based artist Avery Friedman, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, began writing songs in 2023 before releasing her debut album, New Thing, in 2025. The record quickly earned attention for its confidence and vulnerability, in which she talked about her feelings of fear, queer joy, isolation, and loss. Made with producer James Chrisman and percussionist Felix Walworth, the album helped Friedman build a growing presence, leading to performances alongside acts like Mt. Joy, Speedy Ortiz, and Mallory Hawk, as well as radio sessions with WNYU and WVKR. “You Move” is her first release since the debut, and it shows an early glimpse of the bigger, bolder second album she has teased for 2027.

The single feels like a natural step forward. Friedman’s vocals stay clean and clear, sitting comfortably above the mix, while warm guitars with a light touch of distortion add a little color without taking away from the song’s softness. The drums stay simple and controlled, pushing a little harder when needed, while a catchy bassline keeps everything moving and groovy. Playful, game-like effects appear throughout the track, giving the track an extra sense of character and playfulness.

Lyrically, Friedman uses garden imagery, roots, soil, and watering something that’s worth growing to explore the idea of trusting a new love and allowing it to develop naturally. It’s a simple idea, but the way she wraps it into the song’s playful production makes “You Move” feel fresh and interesting.

“You Move” arrives just before Friedman’s first UK and EU tour, beginning October 31 at Amsterdam’s London Calling Festival and continuing through Berlin in mid-November. With such an interesting new direction already taking shape, both the tour and whatever Friedman has planned for her upcoming releases will be worth keeping an eye on.
