Soft Top Intrepid’s new single “Pause” is dreamy and makes sure to immerse you in a world of its own. With a dash of a similar sound to shoegaze bands like Airiel, it has an ethereal atmosphere that is both relaxing and exciting. The synths are reminiscent of popular 1980s music, and the guitar hooks add a modern dimension to it, reminding me of indie bands like Wallows.
Released on the 8th of August, the single is the product of Rob LaPlante and Chris Galambos’ combined work as a guitar-pop duo based in Ottawa. Its melody is incredibly catchy – I caught myself humming along to it in only my third listen. The use of synths to mirror the melody also helps it stick.
“Pause” has a fitting name. The song feels perfect for pausing, winding down, and just basking in the moment. It sounds hopeful and nostalgic, bringing the audience back to earlier times while also emanating a sense of reassurance that there is more good to come in the future. The production of the song helps deliver the lyrics’ message in a way that makes it all come together perfectly.
This song is perfect for listening to on a late-night drive, or a road trip, or lying in bed staring at the ceiling. It fits any situation as long as you’re enjoying the present. Soft Top Intrepid’s sound definitely hooked me from the start, and I’m excited to check out more of their work.
