Count Shaw (real name Olly Shaw) is a solo artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Birmingham, England.
His new tune – Sediment – is largely rooted in grunge tones and textures, but it also has some of the seismic sonic sorcery of metal giants Deftones about it. The influence of alt-rock legends Smashing Pumpkins is also detectable, as well as more modern acts like Wolf Alice, and there are even elements of DIIV-esque shoegazey goodness.
Lyrically, the song is about ostracising yourself, distancing yourself from others when your social battery is drained, and it all feels like too much. There is a tense, sombre stoicism to the vocal delivery that matches the lyrics and that reminds us of indie darlings Daughter, until about 80% of the way through when Olly finally lets loose.
Sediment is a bold and beautiful blend of elements, carefully crafted to make something new and exciting. The Count has been putting out dribs and drabs since way back in 2019 and has gained recognition from BBC Introducing along the way. Here’s hoping for something a bit more substantial to get stuck into soon.
