Hold onto your socks before they’re knocked off, So-Called come in all guns blazing with their latest single ‘Nothing New’.
Bringing pop-punk back to life with a sound similar to the likes of Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 (especially with Jack Lund’s vocals), I’m surprised that the band – hailing from Casper, Wyoming – doesn’t have a bigger following than they currently do. Although after this release, I’m positive that’s soon to change.
The song has everything every stellar pop-punk song should have – hard-hitting guitar riffs (courtesy of Chris Henderson and Justice Greer), drums that get your heart racing (Alex Webster), and growling basslines (Jeff Casey) that get your feet grooving. At the heart of it all, though, the quintet encapsulates the ethos of DIY, which sometimes feels like a dying art nowadays. Not only with this song but also with their energetic live shows that‘Nothing New’ will fit seamlessly into.
Despite how chaotic the tune can feel, the lads are also very technical with their decisions. The five-piece clearly knows how to craft a song, and it’s always a joy to listen to the finished products.
Pouring their entire heart out, this one feels slightly different in comparison to the rest of their discography, which features songs including ‘Disintegrate’ and ‘Shipwrecked’. Modern and nostalgic at the same time, ‘Nothing New’ brilliantly starts off So-Called’s 2026 and leaves me eagerly waiting to see what they have up their sleeve next.
