YouTube channel Trash Theory released a video titled “7 Songs to Blame for Stomp Clap Hey.” The video both explains and breaks down the millennial phenomenon of commercial folk music from Mumford and Sons to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. As valid as the cringey memories may be, you cannot say that without some minor changes, the genre of “millennial folk music” couldn’t be great. For example, Shapes Like People approaches dream folk in a way that earnestly tries to lift you to the Cosmos. From crescendos packed with Mellotron and synths blanketing the guitar and drums to vocals from life partners Carl and Kat Mann blended into something heavenly, the track walks the line between the haze of Cocteau Twins and the sweetness of a ballad by The Rentals or The Weepies. Cringe not. Wrap yourself in its warmth for 3.5 minutes.
