Inspired by a quiet cabin getaway in Powassan, Ontario, “Coming Up For Air” is about “a profound spiritual shift I had during the first days of autumn in my teenage years”. Capturing a raw, grounding feeling of the Canadian wilderness at night, Seth Mackey creates introspective indie rock that feels both intimate and sublime.
His inspiration comes from artists like Elliott Smith, Phoebe Bridgers, and Skullcrusher, and his songs utilize atmospheric instrumentals and reflective vocals to focus on themes of pain, healing, and self understanding.
Seth’s creative process being rooted in a long-standing Buddhist meditation practice, his music centers “the quiet process of turning turmoil into something tender, transcendent, and true”.
Starting off with calming instrumentals, and a picturesque scene, the song sends the listener into a cool Canadian night, with all senses heightened.
Dark and cool,
first day of autumn,
At a place out in Powassan
Grass between my toes
As I walked down
The story continues with beautiful harmonies blending seamlessly with the hushed vocal Seth provides, giving a sense of familiar comfort from start to finish.
With “Coming Up For Air” being his second single, he’s at the start of what could be a historical run, filled with tender vocals and thoughtful instrumentals.
Go take a listen and imagine yourself in beautiful Canada, eh?
