I liked Culver Drive’s fourth-ever single “Patterns” from the first ringing solitary note, as it gently exploded (can something gently explode?) into the primary melody in a nice little murmur of swallows’ warbles.
The vocals sweep in early and neatly, with a harmonic envelope that packages everything dutifully. The sonic edge had a nice slow build that almost reached edginess, which was a nice little surprise. At a clean 3:14 runtime, it absolutely does not wear out its welcome.
I love a song that ends leaving you wanting juuust a little more. There was not a lot of press info for this guy; His name is Parker, he records under the name Culver Drive, and that’s about all that he tells us. I did a search and found Culver Drive on Bandcamp, and there are two songs on that page; neither of which is this one. Do with that what you will, but unless there’s another Culver Drive with two songs that sound remarkably like this, he’s our guy.
If you like indie pop with a gentle, swirling atmospheric soundscape that has a tinge of fuzz, with lilting vocal melodies that make you wish you could understand the lyrics better, this is your bag.
Take a listen to “Patterns” below.
