Brighton-based three-piece alt-rock outfit Sunlifter must surely win the award for the most concise Spotify bio: It simply says “Rock music”. Fair enough!
The band have not been releasing music for very long; their debut EP “Big Hands” was released earlier this year. But they’re not wasting any time. They recently completed a UK tour and have more shows lined up.
Their new single “Kevin” dives straight off the deep end, with explosive drums and wild guitars. It’s a wonderfully crunchy sound with an angular riff that feels like a forgotten grunge classic from the ’90s. Lead singer George Faulkner’s’s vocal starts low, but soon reaches anguished highs whilst singing “It’s all in your head”. It feels like the sky is being torn apart. It’s raw, it’s grungy, it’s melodic, and it sounds fantastic!
“Show my teeth they fall out
And my eyes still bleed
You’re like a knife you know now
You cut me deep”
The funky breakdown after half way is a nice palette cleanser before returning to the crashing, burning power of those guitars, and yet another devastating riff.
The nightmarish imagery of “Kevin” is satisfyingly disturbing, while its earth-shattering sound is sure to keep you awake. Bursting with melodic ideas, surprising twists, and dark turns, it’s shockingly accomplished music for such a young band.
