If a singer-songwriter golden age happens and an indie online magazine doesn’t herald it, did it really happen? Between Piner, Waxahatchee, Katie Gavin, Rhiannon Giddens, Phoebe Bridgers, Haley Henderickx, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Brandi Carlile, Adrianne Lenker, Margo Price, Gigi Perez…
I could continue listing great woman-led Americana/folk/singer-songwriter/indie artists who have either come out recently or have started putting out their best work in the last ten years. But this isn’t a think-piece about who’s leading the new indie-folk revolution. This is a review of Piner’s new single.
TL;DR: It rules. I’m going to write more eloquently about it in a second, but you should know up front that I intend to, as the kids say, glaze the hell out of this woman.
I’d never heard of Piner ahead of writing about “Odelia”, but about five seconds into the first of my dozens of listens to this new single, I knew I’d found a new favorite. She’s everything that’s great about singer-songwriter music: Lyrical, playful, earnest as hell.
The bass might be my favorite contribution to this track—plenty of movement and play while not getting in the way of the song-forward nature of the genre. Odelia is a track to put on as you’re getting up in the morning, brushing your teeth, and waking up, trying to expect better from today.
Oh, what possessed her that she behaved so well?
Fans of any of the above will love this, especially Haley Heyenderickx and Waxahatchee. (P.S. Piner: Please come to Atlanta!)
Take a listen to “Odelia” below.
