Rising Dutch artist Nevin has only released a couple of tracks in the past few years, but she’s been captivating live audiences and is back with a new single, ‘Growth Machine’.
Nevin writes: “The track captures the tension between the human urge to expand and learn from mistakes, and the equally strong instinct to build walls so high that no one can reach inside…Every mistake becomes another layer in that wall, until it feels like I’m racing to have the tallest fortress, even if it’s at the cost of myself.”
The subdued, atmospheric opening sets things up perfectly with distant drums and slowly layered instrumentals.
Nevin’s voice has a warm power that never feels forced – it’s like something is bubbling up from deep below. She handles the wide range of this track with ease, maintaining a glass-like clarity and an elegant expressiveness.
I loved the tone of the guitars – there are multiple textures throughout, each one with its own personality.
Subtle melodies weave through the track, one long note at a time. It gives a feeling of gravity and weight, which I really liked.
The higher, distorted guitar melody that comes in later is wonderful – it feels other-worldly. Actually, it reminded me of a darker, more menacing version of ’80s classic ‘(Feels Like) Heaven’! It alternates with howling, distorted feedback that is visceral.
This is such a classy and brooding song that gets a hold of you and won’t let go until the final notes ring out.
