Hobart, Australia’s, Miah Aplin offers a beautifully melancholic debut single. ‘At Some Point’ sounds like an artist ready to break free of constraints, to take the world by the scruff of its neck and run.
There is a windswept quality to Aplin’s debut, calling to mind the folk-pop of Maggie Rogers, with a clarity of voice and intention, bearing a likeness to fellow Australian, Julia Jacklin. Aplin is more stripped back, however, with most of, ‘At Some Point’ focussing on her voice; her guitar; and a quietly affecting piano, courtesy of Sarah Eddleston. As aforementioned, it sounds like Aplin has found her way out of something. She is no stranger to playing live, so perhaps there is a liberation in finally getting her work recorded for all to enjoy. Her live appearances speak to the confidence she so assuredly possesses in the song. Her voice is the main instrument: it is sweet; fragile in all the right ways, and; overall, just quietly powerful. It is compelling, and along with her songwriting skills (which have clearly been under the microscope) a compelling character is created in Aplin’s image.
If the rest of Miah Aplin’s output is anything like the soaring success of, ‘At Some Point’ (subtly hoping there is soon more to come) then I am certain we shall see the establishment of a real force in music.
