Mega Infinity is one of the hardest bands to try to pigeonhole. While many of their songs follow similar themes, their style and influences are fairly eclectic. They sing pop and indie, and they are clearly ska- adjacent and often very ska. They don’t often venture into punk, and they have often dabbled in hardcore. You’ll hear a lot of rock guitar riffs, and insanely talented solos, but you might hear a melodica, insane bass guitar, or rapped verses- all with lyrics that range from loving, spirituality, social issues, and gender positivity. The band has their second full-length album releasing in January, and in October they released the first single for the album, with “Temperance”. Temperance was definitely the most hardcore/ skacore song Mega Infinity had written, and it is phenomenal.
So what was the next single going to be? Was Mega Infinity shifting into a newer, more hardcore mode? Well, not exactly… at least, not with this song.
“When You Get Home” has a vibe that does not accurately describe its song. This song feels like a Kate Bush song, to me. I can’t explain why, but it doesn’t really sound like Kate Bush’s vocals or her music, but the type of feeling I get when listening is similar. It’s a strong, clean, soft song that is full of love and empathy.
The song is just a message of love, repeated over a lifetime. Call me when you get home safely- first to a new lover going back to their own home, then to a long-term partner, going back to a shared home. A message of safety, nothing more, yet somehow more than just “I love you”. A message that says I care about you, I worry when we are apart, and I want you to know I’m thinking of you and want to know you are safe.
The song progresses, and a child is born, raised, tended with Loveland compassion, and grows to be an adult. The message of love never changes. Whether to partner or child, call me when you get home safely. Let me know that all is well, and in the meantime, I’ll be worried, and a part of my heart and mind will be focused on you.
Far from the hardcore and skacore vibes of “Temperance”, but somehow perfectly situated in the diverse catalog of Mega Infinity. A message of love. Call me, and everything will be right in the world.
