We don’t know much about the band Mayfire, but what we do know is that – at least according to their Spotify profile –they are “suitable for vegetarians.” What that has to do with the new single “Daylight” eludes me, but given the guitar-driven hooks that animate this song, I doubt even carnivores will care. The song has an undoubtedly omnivorous appeal.
Recorded in Peckham, London with Brett Shaw at 123 Studios, this is the first song ever released by the band. The arrangement and production, however, suggest a maturity beyond their years. The vocals somehow bring both Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley to mind, taking center stage in an alt-rock sound that feels built for college radio. To that end, this is an auspicious start for a band primarily concerned with dietary preferences.
The lyrics take on somewhat familiar territory: It is a song about yearning and pining and moving on from someone, but why would we want anything different? Describing the song, they write, “It’s about the struggle of having to break up with someone you are still in love with.” In this spirit, they sing, “I have to leave at five in the state I’m in / You know that life ain’t fair / To bear, to care to have thoughts and feelings,” twisting the word “feelings” in a pronunciation and warble that sounds straight out of The Bends. It is an anthemic breakup song that announces Mayfire as a band to watch in the coming months and years.
