Single: Angela – Immaterial

Listening to ‘Immaterial’ will transport you to the middle of a tumultuous, crashing sea.

Angela Begin is positively steeped in music. The Canadian lists singer-songwriter, radio show host, and music educator as some of the strings to her bow.

‘Immaterial’ is the final single taken from her debut EP ‘Messenger’. Created for a songwriting competition, it came together in one sitting – and in just 30 minutes!

Angela says the song is a caricature of herself and of what happens when you disrespect your own standards.

After a ghostly 10-second intro, the track dives straight in with all the elements fully formed. A rumbling bassline, a looped, shuffling beat, and insistent guitars thunder along like a runaway train.

The song feels gloriously gritty. Barely pausing for breath, the vocal follows an expressive path with a melody that becomes almost hypnotic in places. The subtle harmonies are perfectly placed, and little flourishes in the vocal add wonderful colour.

“At a new low
Are you sure this thermostat isn’t broken?
Inexplicable chill”

Angela is a versatile songwriter – each release so far has had its own fluid style. ‘Immaterial’ has a slightly harder edge – a grungy, indie-pop, shoegazey sound with slight throwback tendencies. The momentum of the track feels like falling through space – where the weight of the track becomes – immaterial.

Angela’s music is inspired by the natural world and the themes of spaciousness, temporality, and transformation. This makes perfect sense – listening to ‘Immaterial’ will transport you to the middle of a tumultuous, crashing sea.
