Single: Luje – Try Me

French indie rock band Luje have released their 2nd single this year, ahead of their upcoming 2nd album.

The band writes, “Try Me evokes the need to be challenged and to be able to prove oneself without being left behind”.

There’s a wonderfully clear sound, and a cool offbeat rhythm which gives the track an interestingly angular feel. A carefully layered & spacious sound that feels modern, but also seems to have deep roots, travelling back to more classic tracks.

A rolling, repeating groove is the returning backbone of the song, and the vocal melody twists and turns around the guitars.

A few times, I found myself thinking of Nirvana – some of those brilliantly simple guitar licks are up there with the best, and the guitars have a lovely metallic tone. Strange sounds wander in and out. Some amazing FX & processing create a darkly atmospheric experience.

When the chorus hits, the walls close in as everything synchronises. The vocal gels perfectly and is tightly backed by the guitar. I loved the dissonant wail and the sudden note drop. It’s a strange & slightly menacing sound.

“Try me – try me now – let me question myself.”

Dark, powerful moments alternate with delicate phrases and melodies, giving a real sense of struggle, and there are so many ideas and inventive touches that as soon as it’s over, you will want to listen again.

Try Me is one of the most unique and memorable songs I’ve heard in quite a while.
