Single: His His – Hardcore Band

The latest single from Toronto-based artist Aidan Belo, recording under the His His moniker, is a sleepy, lo-fi croak of a track – all slacker strum and vocal insouciance- that’s curiously beguiling. It hangs around for less than two minutes; it’s a blink and you’ve missed it capturing of a wandering mind.

The familiar warble of a Tascam tape recorder brings intimate warmth to a song inspired by Belo’s friend’s desire for him to be, as the title suggests, in a hardcore band, where ‘mosh pits and sweaty clenched fists’ are the raison d’être. Of course, this is about as far removed from that sonic world as is possible and is part of a wider portfolio of songs created, as Belo states, ‘in an attempt to evoke something rural and honest.’ It’s certainly direct and unstudied in both concept and delivery, and captures, as a result, an easy, natural charm that’s both welcoming and warm.

Woozy keys ripple in the background, and there’s space found too for a gangling guitar breakdown that sounds like it was played through a homemade distortion box – it’s a wonky, foggy, short-lived delight that’s set for release on the 21st of September.  Go check it out.
