Single: Lozenge – For Lack Of Trying

Essentially a song about not being inspired to do anything and feeling like shit because of it, this shoegaze trio comes across more nuanced than many.

On their second single of the year, Leeds-based alt-rock/shoegaze trio Lozenge bring the sonic thunder. And yes, it’s noisy, yes it’s abrasive, yes it sounds huge, BUT it’s also definitely more nuanced than many.

There’s a definition about the sound here that bucks the sometimes muddy stylistic choices of the current crop of nu-gaze acts. Even the vocals are clearer and easier to understand than is typical for the genre. From a shoegaze perspective, For Lack of Trying is a revelation. It demonstrates that it’s OK to colour outside the lines, to think outside the box, and not to conform to what is expected of you as artists.

Essentially a song about not being inspired to do anything and feeling like shit because of it, frontman Joe Collinson puts in an MVP performance on both vocals and guitar whilst the rhythm section (made up of drummer and new member bassist Joe Clarke) hold the whole thing together beautifully.

The band secured a support slot with critical darlings Hotline TNT a couple of years ago in their hometown of Leeds (at the legendary Brudenell Social Club, no less), and we bet that was a match made in guitar heaven. We’ll definitely be interested in seeing them should they make their way down to London.
