In November 2025, when I was but a fledgling Start-Track writer wetting my feathers, I wrote my first article about Lord Jane’s incredible EP The Lifting of the Fog. Now, a few seasons later, the Belfast rockers are back with a new single, “Think of Something Nice”. And here I am writing about them! Time is a flat circle.
“Think of Something Nice” follows the solid indie rock sound from the previous EP, featuring Clodagh May’s intense vocals and the impeccable performances of Sam Foote (guitar), Aidan Reynolds (guitar), Carl Small (bass), and Dylan Nortin (drums). The song starts a touch slow, with only a guitar refrain, drums, and May’s vocals building up to a burst of energy which breaks about a minute in. From there, the band weaves powerful musical phrases with more restrained and ruminating sections, ending the track with a repeating outro that explodes before fading into a low hum. The entire composition of the song — from its music to its structure — is striking.
The movement of “Think of Something Nice” reflects constantly shifting mental states, especially due to anxiety around moving through life at a slower pace than everyone else. The new single was inspired by a health scare affecting a member of the band, and it explores the fear of leaving the world without having made an impact: “Til my lungs gave out / I didn’t know how much I wanted / Til I went without / And I’m not getting any younger.”
It also covers the trepidation of focusing on art at a great personal cost instead of hitting milestones that others are reaching: Buying homes, getting married, starting families. “My best friend since childhood just had a kid,” May sings, “while I played my third show where no one came. Please tell my mother in case I die, and I’ll buy her flowers so she knows I tried.” (That line hit me quite hard on a personal level.)
Thematically, the song follows the idea of The Lifting of the Fog: We hope that one day fear and depression will get off our backs and let us move a little lighter. But until then, we’ll have to deal with our brains asking us if we’re truly satisfied in life. It’ll ask, “Is it worth making art at the expense of your personal life?” and “Do you think anyone will care about your music?” and “Isn’t it silly to write about other people’s music instead of make your own?” The answers to those questions – by the way – are “Yes”, “Yes”, and “Shush”. With those questions taken care of, we can all think of something nice.
It’s very lovely to have Lord Jane back with new music, and hopefully there’s more around the corner. For now, take a listen to “Think of Something Nice” below.
