Single: Phantom Sugar – Motorola Razr

An absolutely infectious, incredibly charming indie pop/rock bop, this nostalgic feeling tune blends slacker rock with jangly lo-fi sounds to excellent effect.

Jangly, lo-fi, energetic indie rock and pop is the order of the day on the nostalgic feeling new Phantom Sugar single Motorola Razr.

Frontman Stevie Zita is someone we’ve covered innumerable times previously on this blog in his eponymous solo guise but, after a little period of relative inactivity, it’s good to see Phantom Sugar creeping back into focus (their prior single – Fadeaway – came out in May and you can read the review of that here).

The breezy, lazy, sometimes fuzzy vibe that permeates the track is instantly adorable and perfect for the ridiculous weather we’re currently having in the south of the UK (30° today, 38° later in the week – kill me now).

Reminiscent of Darwin Deez, Weezer, Surfer Blood, Drums, The Strokes and more, there is a distinct indie/slacker vibe here and, pair that with a peppering of punky/grungey essence and an unmistakable surf rock overtone and it’s pretty safe to say that this Toronto quartet are on to a winner.

Zita laments the modern generation with lines like “All these young bloods out here starting fights” but in the next breath declares he doesn’t care. We wonder if that’s entirely true or if this is, perhaps, the sound of someone trying to convince themselves of something.

Either way, it’s an absolutely infectious, incredibly charming indie pop/rock bop, that much is inarguable. As instantly iconic as the unforgettable, inimitable cellular device that it’s named after, Motorola Razr is sure to have you in a chokehold all summer. Brace yourselves for this one.
