Single: Lawrence Kim – Madeline

Set apart from other recordings of its ilk and imbued with more personality and character.

Madeline is a simple but effective anti-folk tune from New York City-based songwriter Lawrence Kim.

A brand new solo venture for the veteran musician and one-time member of BMX Bandits, Scam Avenue, and The Amber Smith – he had found that he’d amassed a collection of songs that he just didn’t have the energy or inclination to work out how to record them in bands.

“I had written some songs, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of finding people to play them with, rehearsing, and all the rest of it. So I decided to do as much of it as I could on my own.”

The resulting album is, fittingly, centred around the accidental theme of isolation and being alone – something that its author is keen to point out is not the same as loneliness. The album in question is titled The Hours And The Times and is due for release on May 15th.

Getting back to Madeline, the music here is warm and seems mostly centred on traditional acoustic instruments, but it also has a slightly contrary-feeling, steady electronic beat at its core. The juxtaposition sets it apart from other recordings of its ilk and imbues it with more personality and character, and, as a result, feels like a bit of an inspired choice.
