Single: Joyer – At The Movies

Starting with an effective, minimal backbeat, the intro to the new tune from the East Coast indie rock duo of brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan – known collectively as Joyer – is begging to be sampled for a hip-hop song. Once the guitar properly kicks in, it feels a bit like Island In The Sun by Weezer, and we feel assured and at home.

As the song progresses, it takes on a slightly more awkward or wonky vibe, channelling the likes of Pavement or Modest Mouse, and when the vocal comes in, we’re met with melancholic Elliott Smith vibes.

The somewhat dreamy song builds organically to a slightly discordant chorus that works well dynamically in relation to the verses. There’s a post-chorus bridge where things spiral a little bit (in a good way!), and it feels somewhat like falling down an effects-laden rabbit hole.

Towards the end of the song, we’ve veered maybe into Mac DeMarco territory vocally, and the psychedelic-slacker rock instrumentation builds and builds to a huge, colourful, chaotic crescendo.
