Single: HANK – maybe

Chill out with bedroom pop from Hong Kong that finds peace with the current moment.

I think I’ve covered a good amount of heavy and cerebral tracks as of late, and I owe it to myself – and to you, perhaps – to cool things down a bit. This is HANK from Hong Kong, a bedroom artist who has dropped tracks since 2021. Their new single “maybe” doesn’t deliver anything too heavy: It’s got a nice flow, some simple synth strings, a feel-good beat, and a little guitar riff that feels like laying in the park on a summer day.

HANK plays with the volume a bit to give a sense of rhythm, dropping it to zero at about a minute into the track to simulate a DJ cutting the sound of their turntables. It gives a little Mac DeMarco and Alex G, plus a little trip-hop and lot of bedroom indie flair, lush with sensible reverb that sounds like the waves of a beach or peace of mind.

“Maybe I’m right where I need to be,” HANK sings in the chorus, in a chilled-out tone. “Maybe it’s a possibility.” Today it seems difficult for any of us to think that our current situation is all there is. Or perhaps we dream of being anywhere else doing better off. But then again, life could always be worse. And sometimes, despite how tough everything feels, it helps to sit back, take a breath, and understand that we’re all where we are for a reason. And then we can carry on.

Take a listen to “maybe” below:
