“Got a Wild Hair” is the lead single from Grady Philip Drugg’s forthcoming LP, 4. Our first glimpse of the new record, out November 8th via Arkansasan label Tape Dad, is an easy-going ode to catching up and shooting the breeze with an old friend.
Drugg’s innocently sweet and laid-back vocal melody drifts over a rhythmically strumming acoustic guitar and snare drum, as jangly guitars are sprinkled throughout the track’s blissful three-and-a-half-minute runtime. A baroque pop style descending chord progression, and tight vocal harmonies on the second half of the song, add a vintage ‘60s flair. A lilting and unassuming keyboard solo follows the first and final choruses before the track fades like a picturesque southern-midwestern sunset.
Lyrically, the tune is a bittersweet retrospective on what once was; past times when things seemed simpler, wilder, and there was a sense that the future held unlimited possibilities. Instead of being down that those days are gone, Drugg seems grateful for those past memories and content in the present. The single is accompanied by a VHS-quality music video which depicts the day in the life of a bathrobed-wanderer, paying homage to one of Jeff Bridge’s most memorable characters.
Grady Philip Drugg has established themselves as a stalwart support in many fantastic musical groups like Willi Carlisle, Dylan Earl, Ings, and Dreamgirl, and it is exciting to hear Drugg step to the front of the stage and sing a new batch of their own songs on this fourth full-length release.
