Dreampop fans, listen up: Goodnight House has a new song, and you’ll probably want to give it a listen. Out August 22nd, “You Know I Know You Know” takes influence from bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Pinegrove and Stars, while still distinguishing itself as its own thing. With Joel Lane and Megan Lane on vocals, it marks a new moment in Goodnight House’s trajectory, now as a husband and wife duo.
With vibrant guitars, calm but passionate drums and a catchy melody, the track eases us into a nostalgic reminiscing of what could’ve been, but also an uncertainty of what can still happen. The vocals are sweet, and the layering of both singers’ voices in different octaves, as well as the harmonies and even shouted bits, really add to the poignant quality of the song. To me, Joel Lane has no trouble setting the tone for his music’s message from the start, and it shows.
The song’s lyrics are honest and have an almost confessional tone, focusing on past regrets and the sense of never fulfilling one’s full potential. The “main character” of the song (meaning the person whose point of view we’re observing) starts as someone who pretends to be whatever other people expect of them, wanting to change and grow but not knowing how. This introspective reflection essentially drives them to question: they’ll change, but will they change into something they’re pleased with? And will that change be enough?
“You Know I Know You Know” is, in short, a really exciting release for dreampop and indie fans. It has vulnerable lyrics, nostalgic chords and an ethereal sound. From listening to it, Goodnight House sparked a curiosity in me to get to know what else they have in store. If you like the single, make sure to check out the album where it is featured, “Good Consumers”, out on October 3rd.
