“Affirmations” is the latest single from Portland’s Goodnight House, and it is exactly what it says it is: an affirming track anchored by love and care. Sung from the perspective of someone holding space for another in distress, it unfolds slowly, patiently, over shoegaze-soaked guitars that evoke a heavy warmth. The standout lyric, “Always find a way back to yourself,” feels like both a mantra and a love-filled dedication. The concept is admirable, and the execution gentle yet relentless in the repetition of the title in the chorus honours the weight of the message it is trying to convey.
Goodnight House is the ever-evolving project of Joel Lane, whose music weaves confessional vulnerability through a meled of sounds, from acoustic murmurs to waves of distortion and alt-country grit. Since 2008, the project has transitioned between solo act, full band, and duo, but Lane’s voice, both melodic and emotionally present, remains the constant. His influences span from Sufjan Stevens (the shameless devotion really makes sense here) to Pavement, and that range is present even in a single track like this.
