Single: ELITIN – IMAYBAT

Coming across a bit like a combination of Bon Iver and Massive Attack, the new tune from alt-indie duo ELITIN feels both intimate and epic.

At various points, it feels rich, tender, cinematic, and guarded – sometimes it seems like a couple of these sensations are in play at the same time. The atmosphere created here is unmatched by anything we’ve heard in recent memory. Its widescreen beauty and poetic poise feel like they should be at odds with each other, but they work together perfectly.

There are mighty Merry Clayton vocal samples, subtly employed. Distinctive Mike Dean-style guitar tones. Gorgeous James Blake-like production. Small, but important, brass parts. Massive synthy stings, momentary Mezzanine-esque beats, and much more at play here. Yet, despite the smorgasbord of influences, IMAYBAT manages to feel largely individualistic and unique.

It’s professional sounding and extremely accomplished, and we’d suggest its authors – Justin Miller and Elijah Bisbee – are nothing less than experts in their respective fields.

Their forthcoming full-length album – entitled Through the Fabric, due out in May – will be the result of three years of writing and refinement. We will very much look forward to hearing it.
