“Maybe I’ll Come Around” is the third single from Australian alternative rock band sunbleached’s upcoming album Stop Destroying the Things You Love. While the first two singles have more hardcore influence, “Maybe I’ll Come Around” shows a different side of their sound.
In this track, they trade aggressive distortion for shoegazey chorus and reverb, creating a melancholic atmosphere to match the lyrics as vocalist Josh Baker sings about the destructive cycles in a relationship with an emotionally unavailable partner that you keep coming back to. He says “You know it’s a bad idea, but the little bits of attention keep pulling you back in. The whole thing is messed up and you recognise the pattern, but you ignore it anyway”.
The vocals on the verse are drenched in reverb, but they become drier on the chorus. I love the way this reflects the cycles of closeness and distance. Though the majority of the song is more balladesque, the screams from the previous singles make a welcome appearance at the end.
sunbleached’s recent singles demonstrate versatility within their genre. I’m excited to see where else they go on their album, releasing on September 18th.
