Hardcore music has always tackled world events and social issues, and with an ongoing genocide in Palestine, there is no more important time for hardcore bands to speak out. New York post-hardcore band dweller. tackles these issues in their track “Make Home” and calls listeners to contribute what they can to help the people of Gaza who are currently being forced to live through hell on Earth.
The track itself begins with a raw, clean vocal and guitar sound with lyrics asking the question: “How can I make home when all you make is war?” The people of Palestine are forced to lose their homes and way of life, all because of Israel’s desire for more land. The track quickly brings out a heavy sound reminiscent of metal adjacent post hardcore albums such as Underoath’s Define the Great Line. Guitars are heavily distorted and reverberant, and the song has a very full sound in terms of production. The screamed vocals mixed with the lyrics show such strong emotion, especially in the lines:
Does your heaven cry
separated by borders
made up in dead men’s heads
have we forgotten our neighbor?
Far too many lives are taken in Palestine every day over Israel’s desire to colonize. Borders cause people to not look at one another as humans, and the band calls us to remember our neighbors, remember your fellow humans, and work towards the greater good. This applies not only to the genocide in the Middle East but also to other important issues, such as in the United States, where ICE is violently detaining and deporting innocent people without due process.
