Single: Joker’s Republic – Panic! Panic! Panic!

Joker’s Republic is one of the most fun and exciting ska bands in the scene today, violating all the stereotypes and expectations, and putting out the type of high-speed ska music that lights stages and dance floors on fire- and they do it in the most stripped-down, essentials-only, ska punk set up possible. No horns or keyboards, just guitar, bass, drums, and a truckload of ska punk energy driving the rhythms straight into your ears.

Joker’s Republic’s 2022 album “Necessary Evil” really launched the band into my radar and caught my ear. It was such a damn good album, with some great songs that are still in constant rotation. The New Jersey trio toured and played live shows pretty consistently for the last three years, and started this year off with a couple of cover songs and some hints that they were working on a new album. Then, last month, they announced that they were signing onto Punkerton Records for their upcoming album, titled “The Hand You’ve Been Dealt”.

On July 11, the band dropped the first single off the new album and the first original song since their 2022 album, and, unsurprisingly, it fucking slaps. As a fan of the band, I might expect the song to have fast-paced ska rhythms, punk rock hooks, catchy as fuck, and some fun shreddy guitar hooks.

“Panic! Panic! Panic” is a fast-paced, upbeat reminder to slow down- that panic doesn’t solve anything. Set to the pace of a million thoughts a second, a brain buzzing with activity, the rhythm of ADHD and overstimulation, with the lyrics of meditation and mental health. Calm down. Relax. Or, more specifically, “take a breath before you speak, so you don’t say something you don’t mean- when you Panic Panic Panic, it makes it hard to function”.

I absolutely love how the song is more chaotic, faster paced, and aggressive when describing mental health struggles and the functioning of their brain, but calms down, becomes more melodic, and catchier once it breaks into the chorus of good advice, to calm down, relax, and think before you act- to understand the consequences of action. This sort of musical storytelling is masterful and shows off how damn talented Joker’s Republic really is.

The three-piece punk ska trio is really about to hit us with one of the best ska punk albums of the year, and, while I’ve only heard the first track, I feel like this is on pace to be a defining album that will last years into the future. The subject matter, the production, the execution, the vocals, and the construction are all on point. I can’t wait for more.
