A jangly, sugar-coated, bittersweet song, the new tune from Bristol-born, Manchester-based songwriter Rachel Cawley – better known professionally as “Creepy Crawly” – is half ballad and half anthem and is quite a deceptive beast.
On the surface, it’s a shimmering, happy-go-lucky piece of pop rock. But actually, an undertone of sorrow runs underneath throughout. In the words of the artist, “This song is about a deep-seated longing for a past that can’t be returned to. I had this memory of lazing around on a buttercup-strewn riverbank with school friends. There was nothing to do, yet it felt like everything was about to happen. The details are becoming lost to time, but the intensity of that feeling remains”.
That much is evident through repeated listens, yet, despite the veiled poignancy, you can’t help but get swept up in the glittery guitars and hummable melodies at the forefront. Reminiscent of classic Brit bands like The Popguns, Camera Obscura, The Housemartins, The Sundays, and Lush, this is a potent blend of nostalgia and familiarity.
The track serves as a promising first glimpse of what’s to come on Creepy Crawly’s sophomore album. Entitled I Feel It On My Skin, it is due to arrive on June 5th, 2026.
