Everytime we head into a new season, I start my search for the perfect bunch of songs and other media to accompany me through. As we lean into Autumn, my favorite months to exist, I’m pickier than normal. The stakes are high for me during this time, so when I was shown Ethereal Gone Kids’ new single, I could feel the joy and peace wash over me like a slow-moving goo.
She’s Way Too Cool was released in late August by the Melbourne-based shoegaze/pop-punk geniuses that make up Ethereal Gone Kids. They’re able to create these portals in time and space with incredible melodic phrases, dizzying screeches of guitars, and a vocal tone that sounds magnificently vast. The background guitar specifically reminds me of falling into an endless whirlpool of pure hypnotic entrancement.
The message of this track is felt in every note and drum beat, a sort of longing and bittersweet introspection. In their own words, this song “explores the uncertainty of friendships in your twenties. How people drift apart, the lingering impact of unresolved fallouts, and the anxiety of wondering whether it’s too late to reconnect.” This is palpable through more than just the lyrics, as each second is filled with sounds that create a deep and recognizable ache in your chest. It’s as if they injected the feeling into the soundwaves themselves.
With this being the leading single from their upcoming EP, to say I’m looking forward to more from them is a gross understatement. They have an official music video and live shows planned for the near future, so this is something you won’t want to miss (especially if you’re an Aussie). If you’re a fan of the band Flyying Colours, or a fan of shoegaze in the slightest, this is right up your alley and you’ve got to tap in.
Stream this gorgeous track now and follow Ethereal Gone Kids on socials to let them know you enjoy what they’ve cooked up so far for this upcoming EP!
