Single: Brood22 – This Again

Portland slacker-slowcore band Brood22 boasts their new song ‘This Again’ — supported by Pleasure Tapes (Portland DIY queer label) and Flesh and Bone Records (Chicago DIY label).

The song explores what it means to lose one’s sense of self alongside the fear of codependency:

“I can be anything you want – you can do whatever you please – just let me in”

The vocals are beautifully done — similar to Thurston Moore on that cover of The Carpenters’ Superstar; very held back and whispered, sounding like it’s from a telephone. Very complementary to the DIY nature of this recording.

Sonically, it pulls from the dreamy, fuzzed-out world of Pure X, with tinges of Hum woven in. There’s also that melodic fuzziness reminiscent of Built to Spill and the emotional softness of early Death Cab for Cutie.

The guitar work is expressive, giving the instrument real character with various swells and bends that carry the melody and create dissonant, hazy harmonies over the smooth, spacious drums. In a way, it’s like the slowcore version of Shlohmo’s Bad Vibes.

Perfect for a lazy day — it brings that dreamy, stoner energy. It’s perfectly described as musical Xanax. Keep an eye out for their upcoming EP.
