Single: Borders Of Nothing – The Life We Knew

An intriguing juxtaposition of styles, The Life We Knew is ragged and wild but at the same time, undeniably majestic and graceful.

A pair of ragged, wild guitars – courtesy of Johe Chacón and Estabn García –  introduces the new, third single from Mexico City band Borders of Nothing.

Formed last year by former members of quartet The Naiv, the music is pounding, propulsive, and energetic. The aforementioned guitars are impossible to ignore, and the rhythm section drives with unrelenting force. But the vocals, the vocals are an interesting ingredient.

Majestic, graceful, and ethereal, Ximena Bahena’s vocals almost feel like they’ve been plucked from another song and overlaid on this one. It works, but surprisingly so.

As the song progresses, the music gets more and more massive, spirited, and borderline unhinged – a post-punk, indie, hard rock amalgamation. All the while, the vocals are smooth and airy. It’s a curious juxtaposition and, again, it works surprisingly well.

The band is a three-piece, but they double in size when they perform live. It’s not hard to hear why. Expansive and expressive, we imagine a live Borders Of Nothing show is quite an event. Catch them if you can.

As per the two previous singles, The Life We Knew will be featured on the band’s forthcoming debut album, due for release later this year.
