Single: Ammonite – Little Orphan Girl

No matter the timing, Ammonite’s song choice will always be on time. Where “Feast of Fear” tackles the fear of going home on Thanksgiving to unaccepting family members, “Katie Dear” tackles homophobia via parents, and “Little Orphan Girl” may as well be a murder ballad for the oligarchy we live in today. This sweetly sung country song, which turns out to be a Doc Watson version of a traditional ballad, tells a story about a girl begging for bread and a rich man refusing to help her. Erin Frisby, this song’s lead singer, says that the song “recently came back to mind as I woke every day to headlines about the cruel actions of the U.S. government that are stripping food and aid from children abroad, stopping cancer research for dying children and adults in its tracks squashing their hope, and casting out queer youth, and villainizing those in need while stuffing the pockets of the gluttonous ultra-wealthy.” And while there is no promise that a song can correct the wrongs that are constantly done daily, it can always radicalize those going through it. Right?
