EP: ratstallion – Pit/Eye

If you’ve scrolled through our blog, you might find a lot of shoegaze music, as we cover this genre so extensively that we’ve become an unintentional shoegaze music blog. We are not trying to reduce the number of accepted submissions from the shoegaze genre; we aim to bring more diversity to the sound covered on our blog. Despite this effort, we continue to receive a wealth of great music from this genre.

ratstallion is a “grunge-gaze from the mile high city” (Denver) band that blends shoegaze with grunge, noise rock, post-hardcore, and even screamo. Whatever you try to find it there for yourself, you can. Slow, melodic, dreamy parts are transformed into heavy, noisy guitars that will blow you away. I have been loving the blending of genres that are bringing back the 90s or 2000s, and combining them into one coherent sound that has its own special qualities.

Whether you prefer the heavy, grungy sound of Pit or the shoegazy, dream pop of Eye, you might find something that catches your ear. The songs are full of emotions and personal stories like “struggling to be in the moment and identify feelings as they come up versus through the lens of how you ‘should’ feel about them.” See the lyrics for Eye below:

I stood alone amidst the overgrowth
On a bridge to nowhere but still close to home
I searched for answers that remain unknown
Met there by silence on her holy throne

How to feel
I don’t know how to feel

All under the watchful eye of a future me
viewing all through the keyhole of a memory

I barely know what’s real

I want to throw myself into the green water
and sink underneath
mouthful of silt I need the shock to the system
to remind myself to breathe

All under the watchful eye of a future me
viewing all through the keyhole of a memory

Whether you came for heavy shoegaze guitars, dreamy melodies, screaming vocals, or powerful energy, ratstallion has it all, and you can find the piece that suits you the most. This double single EP is a strong piece of work, and I am interested to see what they will make next to blow us away. Literally.
