EP: Billy Bonbon – Billy

Billy Bonbon is a bedroom rock band formed during the lockdown in Paris. They describe themselves as a dream garage pop band, blending influences from artists like Castlebeat, Joy Again, and Surf Curse.

After releasing several singles since 2020, they return this year in style with their debut EP “Billy”, a four-track mini-album which oscillates between melancholic and upbeat vibes, from quiet moments to bursts of energetic guitars.

I’ve never really listened to much music coming out of France, and I’m glad these guys were my first experience. It was tough to pick a favorite, but today, I’m going with ‘Billy Bonbon’, the third track on the EP. I fell in love with it almost instantly; it’s like Slowdive and Surf Curse had a child. It’s raw and nostalgic, the kind of track that feels like flipping through an old photo album: hazy, youthful, and just a little bit sad in the best way. The instruments carry catchy but straightforward melodies, fitting perfectly with the punchy lo-fi drums and the dreamy, saturated vocals, giving it momentum without feeling rushed. The production has a certain warmth, the homemade quality that makes the bedroom pop so charming. I love everything about it. I’d absolutely blast the entire mini-album in a late-night drive.

The rest of the EP follows a similar mood, balancing a DIY spirit with surprisingly sharp songwriting. Every track feels handmade, nostalgic, and honest. Suppose you’re into dreamy indie rock with a garage twist and enjoy melodies that’re both catchy and melancholic. In that case, Billy Bonbon might just be your new favorite band. Give them a listen and keep an eye on what’s next, because I definitely will!
