EP: Mildred Kid – Shawarma

If I am being completely honest, I was very critical of this EP when I first listened to it. It was very intense. Chaotic. But upon reading a review by another writer here at Start-track, I could re-listen to this EP with a context that allowed me to appreciate the DIY approach of the music. I, for one, already liked the creativity of their track titles – they were reminiscent of some funky film titles. It makes sense that Mildred Kid is a collective of teens just enjoying the journey of making music together. Punk, as stated by Spiros Maus, is meant to be raw and fun.

Shawarma is fun, but it is also a sort of calculated chaos. Over three tracks, this band delivers a thunderous performance and almost whiny vocals that are heard just barely above the powerful instrumentation. As loud as it is, I believe it is well-suited for the atmosphere this band is trying to create. It sure does capture one’s attention. I am skeptical, however, of the similarity in all the songs. It is possible to create cohesion without falling into monotony, especially with such a unique sound and approach. That being said, my favourite track was the bite-sized opener, “To Ivo, or Someone Else”. I am really excited to see what this band does next!
