Part shoegaze, part alt-rock, part nu-metal, the new tune from Oxnard, California trio Stellar Ruins is a formidable beast. The aforementioned cult-favourite subgenres make up the majority of the sound here. Still, there are also flecks of classic rock, dream rock, and grunge that shimmer and shine throughout the course of Sunless’ sonically adventurous four minutes and twenty-two seconds.
Reminiscent at the same time of acts like P.O.D., System Of A Down, Velvet Revolver, and Alice In Chains, it’s a hard rocker that you won’t forget hearing any time soon. Immediately etching itself into your memory, Pumpkins-esque guitars squall, Johnny Rivas’ drums are thunderous, and the massive vocals absolutely soar.
The guitars and the vocals (as well as more subtle synth sounds) come courtesy of frontman Christopher Yane,z who originally birthed the project more than a decade ago, initially as a vehicle for his solo work. Now, joined by the aforementioned Johnny Rivas on drums and KC Mobley on bass, we’d say that Stellar Ruins have very much evolved into their final form.
The whole rock n roll smorgasbord is drenched in a haze of Deftones-like fuzz and feels like a whirlpool of sound, whipping about you, dragging you here, there and everywhere. Quite the ride!
