Colchester-based singer-songwriter dréa szn (known to the government as Andrea Furusa) is a bit of an anomaly. You simply don’t get many Essex-dwelling black girls who make music like this. That’s a fact.
On this refreshing blast of alt-rock, she joins luminaries like Planet Idiot, Stephen Anthony, tall child, and MxDicey in representing People of Colour on the alternative music scene, and we are absolutely, 100% here for it.
“The Picnic Song” is a sincere, heartfelt track that appears to draw inspiration from songwriters like Elliott Smith, Mitski, and Rachel Chinouriri and filters this inspiration through stylistic influences ranging from Deftones to J Mascis.
There are elements of grunge, indie, alternative rock, and shoegaze here. It’s noisy, bold, brave, and unabashed, but also distinctly vulnerable and intimate. It feels confessional, and a cursory glance at the lyrics will explain why. This song first existed as a raw, stripped-back affair – and it was even more tender and sincere then – but now, in the capable hands of producer YAOUNDÉBOXINGCLUB (who is also on guitar, percussion and bass duties) it is also a musical behemoth as well as an emotional one.
“The Picnic Song” is the third single taken from dréa’s forthcoming debut EP, due this July. Check out the music video and follow dréa szn on the socials below.
