Single: Symbol Soup – Miniatures

South London-based singer/songwriter Symbol Soup (aka Michael Rea) unveils his latest track, Miniatures.

Miniatures are “literally about seeing your life as though you’re a poorly detailed character in a miniature village” Michael explains. “Feeling like you don’t have much control over your days, and that life is just a sequence of rooms you have to enter and know the key codes for, but don’t belong in more than anyone else”.

Somewhat at odds with this high-concept and rather esoteric theme, the music is easily enjoyable and reminiscent of the ambitious wonky alt-indie of bands like Cola, Everything Everything and Dead Nature.

Musically, it starts at 100 – with huge multi-layered strings in the intro. From there, it’s all sprawling synths, splashy cymbals, disciplined bass and layered guitars.

The song feels melancholic but at the same time is quite upbeat. These two sensations work well together to make something unique, catchy and memorable.

Since relocating to South London from Milton Keynes, Symbol Soup has become a vital part of the local DIY music scene. Through hosting the beloved “Soupenanny” shows at The George Tavern and The Windmill – where entry is donation-based in support of local food banks – he has cultivated a community of like-minded musicians and audiences.

We love to see it.
