Singles: lowheaven – Amherst / Chemical Pattern / Mercy Death

A metal band from Toronto released 3 singles ahead of their debut album, Ritual Decay.

The first song to release is called Chemical Pattern, right from the start this track just hits you in the face with headbang worthy drums and guitar, and the vocals come in with a very cool effect (find out what effect), this song is pretty intense all the way through and then at the climax softens with lyrics like “Picture yourself in these nightmarish scenes, where everything you love has burned at and between the seams”

The second song they released is titled “Mercy Death.” This song isn’t as in-your-face as the previous one. This one would probably fall in the doom metal subgenre. The band works very dynamically with the vocalist in the first verse, which separates the vocals and the booming instrumentals. The whole thing has this eerie, impending doom sound that I just adore.

The third song that was released and the most interesting, even from the band’s perspective, is called Amherst. This song is the most distinct song, not just on this album, but that they have ever released. You get a clean guitar and vocal layered beautifully together for the first minute. Then, a simple but very pleasant drumbeat adds another layer on top. And around the 2-minute mark, the drums pick up in tempo, leading to the climax and the classic Lowheaven sound. It falls back into the more relaxed, yet not too relaxed, final verse. This song starts to finish beautifully, and to know that it almost didn’t make the album because it didn’t fit the usual heavy sound. I’m so glad they decided to keep it and share it with the world.

These three songs really highlight how amazing and diverse this band can be, as each of the three tracks has a completely different feel. Check them out on Bandcamp, where you can listen to and preorder a really cool-looking vinyl for their upcoming album Ritual Decay, out August 29th, 2025. You can also catch them on tour starting at the end of August. Link to Bandsintown here.
