Oooh, the baseline is pure Pixies vibes. It manages to sound like Monkey Gone To Heaven, Gigantic AND Gouge Away, all at the same time.
When Toronto’s BBQ Pope combine this with the mixture of occasional flourishes, the Nirvana/early Foo Fighters guitar tones and the huge sounds in the chorus, you have a bunch of grunge-gazey goodness. Gotta say, it’s not what we expected at all from the title. Towards the end, it feels a bit like Yuck or DIIV. Or a combination of the two.
Both of these tracks were recorded during the summer of last year at Wychwood Sound with producer Dylan Frankland. We think Dylan deserves a special mention for getting the most out of this track in particular. The dynamics and the mix are really fantastic.
This leads us to Content. Starting with the fuzziest of fuzz bass sounds, it quickly explodes into an euphoric, if monetary, sing-along.
As it progresses, the melody and the pacing remind us a bit of Death Cab For Cutie’s songwriting. That’s not to say that the song sounds like Death Cab. But, there are aspects of it that appear to nod in that direction. There’s also a bit of Brendan Benson’s rock/pop sensibilities here. There’s even a touch of Britpop also-rans like Shed Seven, The Longpigs and The Bluetones.
The final, and perhaps the most notable, component at play here is the huge shoegaze-esque wall of guitars, particularly towards the end of the song, where it’s complemented with almost surf rock sounding tremolo-infused strums. Coupled with the aforementioned extremely catchy sing-along element (the lyrics go “owooo-owooo, owooo-owooo, ooo ooo”), the conclusion is irresistible.
